The Transformer C.O.P. is a safety and continuity device that attaches to pole mounted transformers and prevents power outages caused by wildlife such as squirrels, birds, and snakes. The device acts as a non-conductive insulator, creating a physical barrier between live components and grounded components, thus prohibiting short circuiting of electrical systems and preventing power outages. The C.O.P. was designed for use in the electrical utility industry and serves several beneficial functions, including preventing accidental loss of human life, preventing loss of life to wildlife, preventing damage to electrical system components, and preventing utility service downtime.
Specifically created to meet the needs of electrical utility suppliers, the C.O.P. is custom fashioned to fit onto their existing equipment and takes between 3 to 5 minutes to install – without de-energizing the system. The C.O.P. device solves the long-standing problem of effectively insulating high-voltage transformer equipment in a cost-efficient manner.
Wildlife near power equipment is the most common cause of outages of power utilities, according to the American Public Power Association. Year after year, the intrusion of animals on utility poles results in thousands of outages and costs utility companies billions of dollars in repairs and lost revenue. A single outage can cost tens of thousands of dollars in equipment costs, man hours, and more. All told, outages cost the U.S. economy an estimated $80 - $188 billion annually in lost commercial activity, lowered productivity, downtime, and consumer dissatisfaction.
Fortunately, a solution to the problem now exists. Unlike other wildlife guards, the C.O.P. is not a bushing skirt, but encapsulates the entire transformer lid instead, thereby eliminating grounding points in relation to the primary lines. As a result, the C.O.P. has been 98% effective at eliminating squirrel-related short-circuiting of the top plate. The C.O.P. is independently tested and meets IEEE Standard 1656 governing wildlife guards. It can withstand UV weatherization in the field for up to 15 years. Made from a proprietary blend of polypropylene copolymer plastic, it is di-electrical, non-conductive, and non-capacitive.
